Donate a damaged car in Wilkes-Barre – dents, rust and all

In Scranton–Wilkes-Barre with a car that’s dented, rusty, or accident damaged? You can still donate it. Coal Valley Charity Cars arranges free pickup and a full tax receipt, no bodywork required.

If you’re in Wilkes-Barre staring at a car with dents, rust, a cracked windshield, or storm and accident damage, you can still donate it. Coal Valley Charity Cars works with Heritage for the Blind, which accepts vehicles in any cosmetic condition. From a rusted sedan in Parsons to a hail-dented SUV in Miners Mills or a side-swiped car in nearby Scranton, body damage alone will not disqualify your donation. You don’t need to fix the glass, straighten panels, or touch the paint. We’ll still come get it.

Here’s how it works in Pennsylvania: we schedule free towing right from your driveway, street, or shop in areas like Heights, East End, Kingston, or across the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre metro, whether the car runs or not. Your vehicle is then sold – sometimes at auction, sometimes for parts or scrap – exactly as it sits. The tax deduction is based on the actual sale price, not how the car looks. Heavy damage may mean a lower sale price, but your minimum guaranteed tax receipt is still $500. If it sells for more, you may claim the higher amount per IRS rules using Form 1098‑C. Meanwhile, proceeds go to Heritage for the Blind, supporting services for people who are blind or visually impaired.

How to get your free pickup scheduled

1

1. Tell us about your damaged car

Start online or by phone and describe the body damage: dents, rust, cracked windshield, accident or storm damage. Whether it’s parked in downtown Wilkes-Barre, Plains Township, or over in Pittston, just give the basics so we can schedule the right tow truck.

2

2. Get a clear yes (even with major damage)

We confirm that your vehicle is acceptable even with cosmetic or structural body issues. Heritage for the Blind takes cars in any cosmetic condition, running or not. You don’t need to repair glass, body panels, or paint before we proceed.

3

3. Schedule free pickup anywhere in Scranton–Wilkes-Barre

Choose a convenient day and time. Our towing partner comes to your home, workplace, body shop, or storage lot—whether that’s in Wilkes-Barre Township, Hanover Township, Nanticoke, or Scranton. Pickup is completely free to you, regardless of damage level.

4

4. We tow the car as-is, no repairs or cleaning

On pickup day, you hand over the keys (if available) and signed title. The tow driver loads your damaged vehicle exactly as it sits—dented, rusty, or glass cracked—and takes it to be sold at auction or to a recycler, depending on condition.

5

5. Vehicle is sold; deduction is based on real sale price

Your damaged car is sold in the most appropriate channel. If the sale brings more than $500, your deduction is generally the sale amount; if it’s less, you’re still guaranteed a $500 receipt, subject to IRS rules. We’ll handle the details and paperwork with Heritage for the Blind.

6

6. Receive your tax receipt and feel good about the impact

After the sale, you receive a tax receipt from Heritage for the Blind. For donations over $500, IRS Form 1098‑C is provided. You’ve cleared a problem vehicle out of your life and helped support programs for people who are blind or visually impaired.

Potential complications to watch for

Severe frame or flood damage might affect sale value

Tip: Even cars with major structural or flood damage can usually be accepted, but they may only sell for parts or scrap. That can lower the sale price—and your potential deduction—but your minimum tax receipt is still $500 per current IRS guidelines for this program.

Missing or incorrect Pennsylvania title can slow pickup

Tip: Body damage isn’t a problem, but title issues can delay things. Make sure your PA title is in your name and matches the VIN on the car. If the title is lost or damaged, we can explain how to obtain a replacement from PennDOT before scheduling the tow.

Lender liens must be resolved before donation

Tip: If your damaged car still shows a lien from a bank or credit union, we’ll need proof the loan is paid off. Contact your lender for a lien release. Once you have clear title, we can quickly arrange free towing anywhere in the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre area.

Non-drivable cars must be safely accessible for towing

Tip: Your car doesn’t need to run, but the tow truck does need access. If it’s wedged in a tight garage, buried in a backyard, or blocked by other vehicles, let us know. We’ll plan the right equipment and timing so pickup in Wilkes-Barre goes smoothly.

FAQ

My car has heavy rust and big dents. Can I still donate it in Wilkes-Barre?
Yes. Cosmetic damage like rust, dents, peeling paint, hail damage, and faded body panels does not disqualify your donation. Coal Valley Charity Cars, working with Heritage for the Blind, can accept vehicles in any cosmetic condition throughout the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre area, even if they’re not worth repairing for regular resale.
The windshield is cracked and some glass is broken. Is that a problem?
Cracked or shattered glass is okay for donation. You do not need to replace the windshield or windows. Just mention any broken glass when you contact us so the towing provider can prepare and handle your vehicle safely when picking it up in or around Wilkes-Barre.
My car was in an accident and has frame or airbag damage. Can you still take it?
In most cases, yes. Accident damage, deployed airbags, bent frames, and missing body panels are usually acceptable. The car may be sold for parts or scrap, which can lower the sale price and your deduction, but you can still donate. We’ll confirm details when you describe the damage.
Do I need to fix any of the body damage before donating?
No repairs are required. Don’t spend money on bodywork, paint, rust repair, or glass replacement just to donate. Your vehicle is picked up and sold exactly as-is. The donation value is based on actual sale proceeds, not appearance, so repairs rarely make financial sense for a donation car.
How is my tax deduction figured if the car is badly damaged?
Your deduction is generally based on the vehicle’s actual sale price. If a heavily damaged car only sells for a low amount, that may be your deduction. However, with this program you still receive a minimum $500 tax receipt. For sales over $500, you’ll typically use IRS Form 1098‑C to document the higher amount.
Will you still tow it for free if it doesn’t run or has accident damage?
Yes. Free towing is included whether the car starts or not and whether it has minor dents or major body damage. We’ll arrange a tow truck to pick up your vehicle anywhere in the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre region at no cost to you, as long as it’s reasonably accessible.
Where does my donation go when I give a damaged car?
Coal Valley Charity Cars processes your vehicle donation to benefit Heritage for the Blind, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 58‑2164446). Your damaged car is sold, and the proceeds support services and programs for people who are blind or visually impaired, while you receive a tax receipt for your contribution.
