If your car’s registration has expired in Wilkes-Barre or anywhere in the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre area, you can still donate it to Coal Valley Charity Cars. You do not need to renew the registration, pay back fees, or make the car roadworthy. What really matters for your donation is that you have a valid Pennsylvania title in your name. Once you sign it over, we handle the rest and you still receive a donation tax receipt.
Here’s how it works in Pennsylvania: registration and inspection don’t control whether you can donate. The title does. As long as the title is in your name (or properly signed over to you), we can accept the vehicle—even if it’s been sitting in a driveway in Parsons, parked on a side street in Miners Mills, or garaged in Kingston or Dallas. Our towing partner comes to you, loads the car (running or not), and we process the transfer. You should then notify PennDOT/your local DMV of the ownership change so future registration notices, tickets, or tolls no longer follow you. Your donation helps fund Heritage for the Blind’s programs for people who are blind or visually impaired.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Check that you have the Pennsylvania title in your name
You don’t need current registration stickers, but you do need a PA title. Look for a paper title listing you as the owner. If your name changed or there are other names on it, we can explain how to sign correctly under Pennsylvania rules so the transfer goes smoothly.
2. Tell us your car has expired or lapsed registration
When you call or submit the online form, just mention that the tags are expired or the registration has lapsed. That does not disqualify your donation. It simply helps us note that the vehicle shouldn’t be driven, and we’ll be sure to schedule a tow rather than expecting the car to be driven in.
3. Schedule your free tow anywhere in Scranton–Wilkes-Barre
We arrange a free pickup at your home, garage, or lot in Wilkes-Barre, Scranton, Plains, Hanover Township, or nearby communities. The tow truck comes at a time that works for you, loads the car (even if it’s been sitting for years), and you pay nothing for the towing service.
4. Sign the title for transfer when the tow truck arrives
At pickup, you’ll sign the Pennsylvania title over to Coal Valley Charity Cars’ processing partner. The driver will guide you to the correct places to sign. Once you hand over the signed title and keys (if available), responsibility for the vehicle shifts away from you to the charity.
5. Notify PennDOT/DMV of the donation and transfer
After the tow, you should let PennDOT or your local tag service know the vehicle has been donated and the date of transfer. This helps ensure you’re not contacted about future registration renewals, parking tickets, or toll notices linked to that car after the donation date.
6. Receive your tax receipt and feel good about your impact
Once the vehicle is processed, you’ll receive a donation acknowledgment and tax receipt. Most donors receive at least a $500 tax deduction; for donations valued over $500, you’ll use IRS Form 1098-C. Your old, unregistered car helps fund Heritage for the Blind’s services.
Potential complications to watch for
No title or title not in your name
Tip: Expired registration is fine, but we generally cannot complete a donation without a valid title in the donor’s name. If you can’t find the title, contact PennDOT about a duplicate before scheduling pickup. If someone else is on the title, we’ll explain how each owner needs to sign.
Car is on someone else’s property or in a private lot
Tip: If your unregistered car is parked at an apartment complex, workplace, or friend’s driveway in Wilkes-Barre, make sure you have permission for the tow truck to access it. Let us know about gates, tight alleys, or parking garages so we can send the right truck and avoid delays.
Existing tickets, plates, or personal belongings left in the car
Tip: Unpaid tickets don’t usually stop a donation, but they remain your responsibility if they were issued before pickup. Remove your license plates and return or cancel them per Pennsylvania rules. Double-check for personal items, EZ-Pass tags, and paperwork before the tow truck arrives.
Loan or lien still showing on the Pennsylvania title
Tip: If there’s an active lienholder listed on the title, we can’t complete the donation until it’s released. Contact your lender for a lien release and updated title. Once the lien is cleared, your expired registration still won’t be a problem, and we can move ahead with the pickup.
