Donate by Dec 31 in Wilkes-Barre to Claim This Year’s Deduction

In Scranton–Wilkes-Barre, the IRS counts the date your car is picked up, not when you call. Schedule pickup before December 31 with Coal Valley Charity Cars for free towing and this year’s tax deduction.

To claim a car donation on this year’s taxes, the IRS goes by the date your vehicle is physically picked up—not the day you call or fill out the form. That means your car must be towed away on or before December 31 to count for this tax year. Coal Valley Charity Cars, benefiting Heritage for the Blind, schedules most Scranton–Wilkes-Barre pickups within 3–5 business days, Monday through Saturday, including during the holiday season. To be safe, schedule your pickup at least a few days before year-end so we can get you on the calendar in time.

Based here in the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre region, we make year-end donating fast and local. 5. Receive your written acknowledgment and tax form

Within weeks after sale

Year-end tax deduction facts

Dec 31 pickup sets your deduction year

The IRS uses the date your car is actually picked up as your donation date. If Coal Valley Charity Cars tows your vehicle on or before December 31, you may claim the deduction for that tax year, even if the sale and paperwork finish later.

Form 1098-C for vehicles over $500

If your donated vehicle sells for more than $500, Heritage for the Blind issues IRS Form 1098-C. This form shows the gross proceeds from the sale, which typically limits the amount you may deduct. Keep it with your tax records and give it to your preparer.

Deduction usually equals the sale price

In most cases, your deduction is limited to the amount the charity receives when your car is sold at auction or through a buyer. There are some exceptions, but for many donors the allowable deduction equals that reported sale price on Form 1098-C.

You must itemize on Schedule A

To use a car donation as a federal income tax deduction, you must itemize deductions on Schedule A instead of taking the standard deduction. Ask your tax advisor whether itemizing makes sense for you based on your total deductible expenses.

30-day window for written acknowledgment

After the vehicle is sold, Heritage for the Blind sends a written acknowledgment—often including Form 1098-C—within IRS-required timeframes, typically within 30 days of the sale. This confirmation supports your claimed deduction if you’re ever asked to document it.

FAQ

If I call before December 31, but pickup is in January, which tax year is it?
The IRS goes by the date the vehicle is actually picked up. If you call or submit the form in December but the tow truck doesn’t remove the car until January, the donation counts for the new tax year. To claim this year, we must pick up on or before December 31.
How close to December 31 can I schedule in the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre area?
We recommend scheduling your donation at least 3–5 business days before December 31, especially around Christmas and New Year’s. Coal Valley Charity Cars operates Monday–Saturday, but year-end slots fill quickly in Wilkes-Barre, Kingston, and surrounding communities, so contact us as soon as you know you want to donate.
Do you take non-running or uninspected cars in Wilkes-Barre?
Yes. We accept most vehicles whether they run or not, and they don’t need current inspection or emissions. From a dead battery in downtown Wilkes-Barre to an older car sitting in Plains or Hanover Township, we’ll arrange free towing at no cost to you and still provide a tax acknowledgment.
When will I get my tax receipt or Form 1098-C?
You’ll get a pickup receipt when the vehicle is towed, showing that the donation happened by December 31 if applicable. After Heritage for the Blind sells the car, they mail a written acknowledgment and, for vehicles sold over $500, IRS Form 1098-C. This usually arrives within weeks of the sale, but the deduction year is based on pickup date.
How much can I deduct for my car donation?
In many cases, your deduction is limited to the amount the charity receives when the vehicle is sold. That figure appears on Form 1098-C for cars sold over $500. Tax rules can be complex, so we recommend consulting your tax advisor to understand your exact deductible amount and whether itemizing is right for you.
What areas around Wilkes-Barre do you serve for free pickup?
We provide free towing throughout the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre region, including neighborhoods like Parsons, Miners Mills, South and East Wilkes-Barre, plus nearby towns such as Kingston, Forty Fort, Luzerne, Nanticoke, Hanover Township, and Plains Township. If you’re unsure whether we cover your location, just call—we likely do.
Do I need to clean or repair my vehicle before donating?
No. You do not need to spend money on repairs, inspection, or detailing. We accept vehicles in as-is condition. Just remove personal belongings, have the keys and title ready if possible, and we’ll handle the rest—from towing in Wilkes-Barre to sale and paperwork with Heritage for the Blind.
